The Decorative Art of Guilloché, Cut By Hand

There are few things I enjoy more than taking a centuries old decorative technique and reinterpreting it within a piece of jewellery.

The Illumination Pendant is inspired by the intricate beauty of guilloché; a decorative patterns traditionally created using specialised rose engines to produce mesmerising, light-catching geometric engravings. Rather than using a machine, every line on these pendants is engraved entirely by hand, one cut at a time.

The result is a pendant that comes alive as it catches the light.

A full day's work in a single pendant

Each Illumination Pendant takes around a full day to create.

Every stage is completed by hand, from cutting the eye and seat for its gemstone pupil to raising the delicate milgrain border that frames the design. The radiating sunburst pattern is then carefully laid out using a fine architect's scribe before each individual line is engraved by hand. Every millimetre is cut using traditional hand gravers under magnification; there are no engraving machines, no laser textures and no shortcuts.

It's a slow process that demands patience and precision, but it's also what gives each pendant its unique character. The engraved facets catch and reflect the light from different angles, creating a subtle shimmer that dances acoss it's surface.

Every cut has a purpose, coming together to create a pendant that's designed to catch both the light and your attention.

Discover the craftsmanship behind the design in my latest reel:

The symbolism behind the design

At the heart of the pendant sits an eye, centred with a gemstone pupil.

For centuries, the eye has been used as a symbol of intuition, protection and clarity; a reminder to trust your instincts and see beyond the surface. Surrounding it, the hand-cut rays represent illumination, knowledge and guidance, with each engraved line drawing the eye towards the centre stone.

Together they create a piece that's rich in symbolism whilst remaining timeless enough to wear every day.
