Care Guide
Preserving the beauty of your jewellery.
Our jewellery is individually handcrafted using precious metals and natural gemstones. With appropriate care, your pieces can be enjoyed for many years. However, precious metals and natural gemstones are not indestructible, and their appearance and condition will change with wear.
Below are our recommendations for caring for your jewellery and preserving its finish, settings and gemstones.
We recommend removing your jewellery before:
- Household cleaning, washing dishes or handling chemicals.
- Bathing, showering, swimming or using hot tubs.
- Exercising, gardening or undertaking manual activities.
- Sleeping, to avoid pulling, tangling or unnecessary pressure on settings.
Avoid direct contact with perfumes, cosmetics, hairspray, lotions and household cleaning products. Allow skincare and fragrance to dry before putting jewellery on.
Take particular care to avoid dropping, knocking or catching jewellery against hard surfaces. Even durable gemstones can chip or fracture following impact.
Sterling Silver
Silver naturally tarnishes over time through exposure to air, moisture, sulphur and everyday products. This is a normal characteristic of the metal and not a defect. Store silver jewellery in a dry, enclosed environment when not being worn. A suitable silver polishing cloth can be used to restore its shine.
Gold
Solid gold is durable but can still scratch, dent and develop surface marks through everyday wear. Higher carat gold contains a greater proportion of pure gold and is generally softer, making it more susceptible to scratching and deformation.
Platinum
Platinum is exceptionally durable but is not scratch-proof. With wear, its surface develops a natural patina. This is a characteristic of the metal rather than damage or deterioration. Professional polishing can restore a brighter finish if desired.
Engraved & Oxidised Finishes
Hand engraving and intentionally darkened or oxidised details require particular care. Repeated polishing or abrasive cleaning can soften engraved details and remove darker surface finishes. Avoid polishing directly over these areas.
Natural gemstones vary considerably in hardness, toughness and sensitivity to environmental conditions. A stone that is resistant to scratching may still be vulnerable to impact, heat or sudden temperature changes.
Some gemstones require considerably more care than others.
Diamonds & Sapphires
These are among the hardest gemstones used in jewellery and offer excellent resistance to scratching. However, they can still chip or fracture following impact. Avoid knocking settings against hard surfaces and have them checked periodically.
Opals
Opals are relatively delicate and can be vulnerable to impact, surface abrasion, heat and sudden temperature changes. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners, steam, prolonged water exposure and household chemicals.
Emeralds
Emeralds frequently contain natural inclusions and fractures and are commonly treated with oils or resins to improve their appearance. Avoid ultrasonic and steam cleaning, heat, sudden temperature changes and harsh chemicals, which may affect these treatments.
Moonstone & Labradorite
These gemstones can be susceptible to impact, abrasion and surface damage. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners, steam, harsh chemicals and sudden temperature changes.
Other Gemstones
Different gemstones have different care requirements, particularly where treatments or natural inclusions are present. If you are unsure how to care for your particular stone, please contact us before attempting to clean it.
As a general precaution, we recommend avoiding ultrasonic and steam cleaners for all jewellery unless the suitability of the specific gemstone, its treatments and setting has been professionally established.
Our memorial jewellery is made to hold particularly meaningful materials, including hair and ashes. These pieces require additional care and consideration.
Although our settings are carefully sealed to help protect their contents from incidental moisture exposure from light hand washing, they are not waterproof.
We strongly recommend removing memorial jewellery before:
- Bathing, showering or swimming.
- Using saunas, steam rooms or hot tubs.
- Undertaking activities involving prolonged moisture exposure.
- Exposure to significant or sudden temperature changes.
Temperature fluctuations can cause condensation to form within a setting, potentially affecting the enclosed materials. This is uncommon but remains a risk, particularly when cold jewellery is exposed to sudden heat.
Avoid attempting to open, adjust or interfere with sealed settings. If you notice any damage to the setting, please discontinue wearing the piece and contact us.
We recommend using the polishing cloth supplied with your order to gently maintain the appearance of your precious metals.
Please take care not to rub gemstones, engraved details or intentionally oxidised areas with polishing compounds or abrasive cloths.
Do not use:
- Ultrasonic or steam cleaners.
- Bleach, household detergents or abrasive chemicals.
- Silver dips or chemical jewellery cleaning solutions.
- Toothpaste, bicarbonate of soda or other abrasive household remedies.
Some commonly recommended jewellery cleaning methods can permanently damage natural gemstones, surface treatments and specialist finishes.
If your jewellery requires more thorough cleaning or maintenance, please contact us for advice before attempting alternative cleaning methods.
When not being worn, jewellery should be stored in a clean, dry environment, preferably in its original presentation box or individual protective pouch.
We recommend:
- Storing individual pieces separately to prevent scratching.
- Keeping chains fastened and laid flat to avoid tangling.
- Keeping jewellery away from direct sunlight, excessive heat and humidity.
- Storing delicate gemstones like opals, separately from harder stones, particularly diamonds and sapphires.
We recommend periodically checking your jewellery for signs of wear, particularly around stone settings, claws, clasps and chain connections.
If a stone appears loose, a setting becomes damaged or a chain or fastening shows signs of deterioration, discontinue wearing the piece until it has been inspected.
Regular wear can gradually affect settings and components, and preventative maintenance can help reduce the risk of stone loss or further damage.
Damage caused by accidental impact, misuse, inappropriate cleaning, chemical exposure, water damage or failure to follow the recommended care instructions is not covered by our warranty.
Scratches, surface marks, tarnishing of silver, changes in polish and natural wear associated with regular use should be expected over time. These characteristics are not, in themselves, manufacturing defects.
If your jewellery requires attention, please contact us. We can advise on appropriate maintenance and any available repair services.
A FINAL NOTE
Each piece is made to be worn and enjoyed however no jewellery is indestructible. With a little consideration, its beauty and character can be preserved over time. Natural materials and precious metals will develop their own characteristics through wear. This is part of their nature.
If you are ever uncertain about the care requirements of your particular piece, please get in touch before attempting any cleaning or maintenance.
MANUFACTURING WARRANTY
All products purchased from 2025 onwards include a 3-year manufacturing warranty. Orders placed before 2025 are covered by a 2-year manufacturing warranty.
During this period, qualifying manufacturing and structural faults will be repaired free of charge.
Our warranty covers faults arising from the original materials, workmanship, construction or assembly of a piece. This covers things like: defective solder joints, inadequately secured stone settings, faulty connections, structural weaknesses or failures resulting from defective manufacturing.
WHAT IS NOT COVERED
Our manufacturing warranty does not cover damage or deterioration resulting from accidents, impact, misuse, inappropriate care, normal wear and tear or external factors.
This includes, but is not limited to:
Accidental & Physical Damage
Damage caused by dropping, knocking, snagging, bending, crushing, excessive pressure or other physical impact. This includes bent or misshapen metalwork, damaged settings, broken components and damaged decorative details.
Gemstone Damage & Stone Loss
Chips, fractures, cracks, breakages or lost gemstones resulting from impact, pressure, abrasion, inappropriate cleaning or damage to the surrounding setting.
A gemstone becoming loose or falling out does not automatically constitute a manufacturing defect. For example, where a claw or setting has become bent, worn or damaged through use, resulting in a stone becoming loose or being lost, the resulting damage is not covered by the warranty. However, a stone becoming loose due to an original manufacturing fault may qualify.
Gemstone Abrasion & Contact Damage
Natural gemstones vary considerably in hardness and durability. Softer or more delicate stones are particularly susceptible to scratching, abrasion and surface damage.
Wearing jewellery in direct contact with other pieces, stacking rings or allowing gemstones to rub against metal components or harder stones can cause damage and even loss. Scratches, chips and other deterioration resulting from friction, contact with other jewellery or inappropriate storage are not covered.
Delicate Designs & Handcrafted Details
Our jewellery is individually handcrafted, and certain designs incorporate delicate settings, fine engraving, sculptural details and intricate metalwork that require careful handling.
Not all designs are intended for continuous everyday wear or activities involving pressure, impact or abrasion. Damage resulting from excessive force, snagging, bending, pulling, crushing or other avoidable physical stress is not covered by our warranty.
Customers are responsible for taking appropriate care when wearing, handling and storing their jewellery, particularly where delicate or exposed details are present.
Normal Wear & Tear
Surface scratches, tarnishing, dents, gradual changes in polish, worn finishes and deterioration associated with regular use are not covered by the warranty.
Chemical, Water & Temperature Damage
Discolouration, corrosion or deterioration resulting from exposure to chemicals, cleaning products, chlorine, prolonged moisture, inappropriate water exposure or sudden temperature changes.
Improper Care & Cleaning
Damage resulting from unsuitable cleaning methods, abrasive products, ultrasonic cleaners, steam cleaning or failure to follow the recommendations in our Jewellery Care Guide.
Memorial & Reliquary Jewellery
Damage resulting from water ingress, prolonged moisture exposure, heat or condensation caused by failure to follow the recommended care instructions for memorial and reliquary jewellery.
Natural Characteristics
Natural variations in gemstone colour, tone, inclusions, pattern and clarity are inherent to natural materials and are not considered manufacturing defects.
WARRANTY ASSESSMENTS
All warranty claims are assessed individually to establish the nature and likely cause of the fault. We may request photographs or ask for the piece to be returned for physical inspection before determining whether a repair qualifies under the warranty.
Where a fault is found to result from a manufacturing or structural defect, the qualifying repair will be carried out free of charge.
Where damage is found to result from accidental damage, misuse, inappropriate care, normal wear or other excluded circumstances, any repair will be chargeable. We will provide an assessment and quotation before proceeding with paid work.
REPAIRS OUTSIDE WARRANTY
Where possible, we may be able to restore, repair or replace damaged components and gemstones outside warranty coverage for a reasonable fee. Costs will depend on the nature of the repair, materials required and work involved.
Please contact us for an assessment and quotation.
WARRANTY CONDITIONS
Our manufacturing warranty applies to the original purchase and cannot be transferred through resale or third-party marketplaces. Warranty claims must be made by the original purchaser or the intended gift recipient, with valid proof of purchase.
Repairs, alterations or customisation undertaken by third parties, or unauthorised attempts to repair or modify a piece yourself, may invalidate warranty coverage where they cause or contribute to a subsequent fault or damage.
Our warranty is provided in addition to your statutory consumer rights and does not affect your rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 or other applicable consumer protection legislation.
